What does the information found in a family health tree indicate that a disease may have a genetic component? Well, for one thing, we know from molecular biology that all human cells carry within them a set of DNA codes. The DNA codes determine the physical makeup of the cell and these instructions are expressed in cell-specific genetic regulation mechanisms. Genetic disease genes expressed in a way that either directly deny the cells of their respective regulatory machinery or up-regulate the machinery’s activity. When this occurs, the cells of the individual are deformed and possibly cancerous, and cancer is the result. 

This process of gene expression that has been identified is also involved in the process of development and reproduction. For example, a mother with genetic mutations that cause breast cancer may carry these gene sequences in both of her X chromosomes, which would cause those mutations to be passed on to her children. A similar situation can occur in a man’s sperm, where the same mutations found in a family health tree may cause the man to be diagnosed with male pattern baldness. Those in a family who suffer from a debilitating disease such as multiple sclerosis also seem to express more genetic material than others. 

As previously mentioned, diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and autism frequently involve many members of a family, in some cases even an entire clan. The diagnosis of these diseases is sometimes based on a familial study. For example, in diabetes, blood tests are taken from a sample of family members. If sugar levels are high, or if too few of a particular type of enzyme are present, then medical intervention may be called for. The same is true for other common chronic illnesses like heart disease, hypertension, and autism. Once the medical diagnosis is made, the family is notified, and the individual is encouraged to participate in a program of regular drug testing.

For example, most African-Americans are told they have a greater chance of contracting diabetes than Caucasians.
